SITTER2FITTER is an 8 session programme designed by the team at Nordic Fitness Ireland to introduce people, who don’t usually take part in physical activity, to exercise and fitness walking.
The Importance of Exercise
Whatever your age, there’s strong scientific evidence that being physically active can help you lead a healthier and happier life.
People who exercise regularly have a lower risk of developing many long-term (chronic) conditions, such as heart disease, type 2 diabetes, stroke, and some cancers.
Research shows that physical activity can also boost self-esteem, mood, sleep quality and energy, as well as reducing your risk of stress, clinical depression, dementia and Alzheimer’s disease.
What's Stopping You?
Taking part in physical activity can be daunting and somewhat overwhelming for many people. Memories of school PE lessons when you were never picked for the team. The thoughts of having to wear skimpy gym clothes in front of others. Never feeling you would be good enough.
There are lots of reasons why you feel you cannot exercise.
- Lack of time
- Friends and family don’t share your interest in physical activity
- Lack of motivation and/or energy
- Lack of resources/equipment
- Family caregiving obligations
- Frequent work or leisure travel
- The classes are too long or too hard
How is SITTER2FITTER Different?
SITTER2FITTER is run by our husband and wife team who know what it is like to be both fit and unfit. Both in their late 50s they have had all the same thoughts as you during their lives but have learned how exercise can really help to enhance life. They have worked out how to fit it in to a busy schedule or to get out when they would rather be sitting watching Netflix! They understand how older bodies operate! Read more about your instructors.
Exercise for All
The programme has been designed to ensure it is open to everyone: you don’t need to have ever exercised before, you may have a long term health condition, you may have had surgery or returning from illness or injury, you maybe older, everyone is welcome,
What ever your situation we will work with you to gradually increase your fitness through walking.
SITTER2FITTER includes balance, flexibility and strength exercises as well as walking. All essential for overall fitness and wellbeing. You will not be laying down on a mat. Everything is done in a standing or sitting position. You will not be racing around a track. You will work hard but at a gentle pace.
The SITTER2FITTER programme is run over 8 sessions.
Each week you will be gradually increasing the distance you walk, starting at just 10 minutes. We will introduce you to using fitness poles for walking as well as some strength and balance exercises. By the last session you will be comfortably walking for 30 minutes.
You will be required to do some ‘homework’ between the sessions to ensure you get the most out of the programme.

What happens after the 8 sessions?
Depending on how far you have come on your fitness journey we will signpost you to the next steps. This could be joining our regular health walks or fitness classes, or take your fitness walking to the next level and learn to Nordic Walk, so you can join our longer walks.
We will also let you know about other types of exercise that you might enjoy and where to learn.
